How often should a dermatologist screen my moles (naevi) if I am concerned about developing a melanoma cancer?

Although an individual should personally scan their moles preferably on a monthly basis, the frequency of visits to a dermatologist depends on several factors:

1. Age: The incidence of melanoma increases the older one is, particularly above the age of 50
2. Skin photo type: This refers to how easily one sustains a sunburn. Those who burn readily are more likely to develop melanoma.
3. Family history of melanoma
4. A personal history of melanoma which increases the likelihood of developing another melanoma.
5. extent of present and past sun exposure.
6. many naevi i.e. more than 40 or 50 naevi.

Taking all these factors into account the frequency of visits can vary from once in 6 months to once every 2 years.
