Dermatology Services we provide

A dermatologist is a qualified medical specialist who, through additional training, has obtained postgraduate qualifications to specialise in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of skin diseases and skin cancers.

Other potential skin problems that are part and parcel of a typical dermatologist’s work are acne, eczema, skin infections, psoriasis, occupational dermatitis, hair and nail disorders, surveillance of moles and cosmetic problems of the skin.

In addition to general dermatology such as acne, solar keratoses (sun spots), fungal infections of the hair, skin and nails, eczema etc. We also offer the following:

Mole Mapping

Mole mapping is a technique whereby a person's moles (naevi) are catalogued or 'mapped'. The images created can then be used as part of a person's skin cancer surveillance program.

The best way to assess whether moles need to be mapped, is a complete assessment of all your moles using dermoscopy. If all of your moles have a typical regular and benign pattern on dermoscopy then more detailed mapping may not be required.

Skin Patch Testing ( Allergy Testing )

A patch test is a method used to determine if a specific substance causes allergic inflammation of the skin. Any individual with eczema suspected of having allergic contact dermatitis and/or atopic dermatitis needs patch testing.

Patch testing helps identify which substances may be causing a reaction in a patient. It is intended to produce a local allergic reaction on a small area of your back where the diluted chemicals were planted.

Removal of Cysts

With surgery, a cyst can usually be excised in its entirety. Poor surgical technique or previous infection leading to scarring and tethering of the cyst to the surrounding tissue may lead to rupture during excision and removal.

A completely removed cyst will not recur, though if the patient has a predisposition to cyst formation, further cysts may develop in the same general area.

We also provide services for the removal of skin tags and cryotherapy for warts and sebaceous keratoses.

Please feel free to contact us for any questions regarding any of the following.

Questions and answers

Why is acne resistant to treatment despite a course of oral Isotretinoin?

The root cause of acne is hormones acting on the sebaceous gland, and it is the male hormone (androgen) that is responsible for this. Even females have male hormones. In many instances the androgen levels are normal but the skin is more sensitive to even small amounts of hormone.

Oral Isotreinoin treats the effects of androgens on the sebaceous glands causing the glands to shrink. This may be sufficient to prevent further breakouts. However, at times, it may be necessary to manage the cause and directly block the androgens.
